14 Nov 2017 : Armistice Day collection at Runcorn Linnets boosts Poppy Appeal
A collection at Runcorn Linnets on Saturday, in aid of the Royal British Legion's annual Poppy Appeal, totalled almost £200..
Donations from fans during the Buildbase FA Vase second-round tie against Sunderland RCA followed a Ceremony of Remembrance before the Armistice Day match.
Before collecting in the crowd, Army veterans from the Cheshire Regiment Association led the teams onto the field.
The two team captains laid a wreath in the centre circle before the playing of The Last Post and reading by Linnets chairman Mark Buckley of a verse from The Remembrance Poem over the public address system.
The collection brought in £198.74.
Tom Doyle, of Cheshire Regiment Association and Halton RBL, said: 'The money will go towards Runcorn's contribution to the Poppy Appeal and will be added to the national total, which last year was £45 million.
'The money is used wherever it is needed for former servicemen and their dependents. The Poppy Appeal is also used to aid serving members of all arms of our armed forces.
"Well done everyone at Runcorn Linnets. It was a fantastic response and all of the veterans had a great day."
