05 Sep 2017 : Paul Shanley is our Millbank Player of the Month for August
In what can only be described as an indifferent month to start the new campaign, Runcorn Linnets have looked to their established players to lift spirits and performance levels, and no player has risen to the challenge more than Paul Shanley.
Commitment, effort and desire are part of the player's make up and this has been in evidence throughout the month, even when the chips have been down.
The month started with a gritty FA Cup tie against Hemsworth Miners Welfare, a game in which technical ability was always going to be overshadowed by endeavour. But mercifully Shanley showed both, being unlucky to see his long-range curled effort miss by millimetres, before setting up Michael Simpson with a divine control and square pass.
The away win at Abbey Hey in the opening league fixture saw the team easing into a higher gear, and "Shanners" opened his account for the season, rounding the 'keeper and finishing smartly after latching on to Stu Wellstead's pass.
In the following home draw against a resolute Irlam, fans saw the blossoming understanding between Shanley and Zac Aley, carving open chances on numerous occasions.
The introduction of Shanley and Wellstead off the bench at 4-0 down almost sparked an unlikeliest of comebacks at Brocstedes Park as the Linnets bowed out of the FA Cup to Ashton Athletic.
Paul returned to the starting eleven for the Linnets best performance of the campaign so far, and he was instrumental in the destruction of Winsford by five goals. Shanley served up an assisting masterclass, setting up Callum Lucy, Wellstead, and then Antony Hickey with pin point passes from the flanks.
Shanners was unlucky to not score at West Didsbury, denied by the cross bar and some great goalkeeping, but his performance in the 4-0 loss typified his determination and desire to make something happen.
He is a deserving choice as Our Millbank Player Of The Month for August.
04 Sep 2017 : Pastures new for Linnets pair
Pre-season capture Jack Flemng has been released by Runcorn Linnets.
The defender, who joined from Marine, is the second player to have left the club in the last couple of days.
Tony Donaldson departed after a brief second spell with the club and made his debut for Widnes FC on Saturday.
Jack is expected to sign for AFC Liverpool.
We wish both players well.
03 Sep 2017 : Runcorn Linnets youth teamer Kasie Jones earns promotion to senior squad
Runcorn Linnets have signed 16-year-old midfielder Kasie Jones from the club's newly-forned Youth team on Hallmark Security League forms.
Kasie has now officially joined the first-team squad after training with the senior players for the last month.
In that time, he has really impressed the management team with his ability and maturity and he is rated very highly.
Kasie joined the Linnets in the summer, having been with Crewe Alexandra.
He has been an integral part of the youth team, which has expanded and enhanced our junior section with a view to bridging the gap to Michael Ellison's senior squad.
The team has made an excellent start in the West Cheshire League with maximum points from the first two games after Saturday's 5-2 defeat of West Kirby United Youth.
The Linnets Youth squad was chosen en bloc to represent Runcorn & District in the Cheshire FA's Inter District tournament and as a result three of our players, including Kasie, have been selected to represent the County.
The other players to earn call ups are Luke Cawley and Eden Gumbs.
Kasie was on the first-team bench for Saturday's 6-1 HSL Premier Division victory over Padiham and will be available for the youth and first teams as part of his continuing development.
Club chairman, Mark Buckley said: 'This is an excellent opportunity for Kasie and is further evidence of our manager Michael Ellison's wilingness to bring young players through and help them to progress.
'It is also a significant move for the club as we prepare to transfer into our new clubhouse, which will accommodate and meet the needs of our men's, women's and junior teams.'
