As already reported on our social media sites, the club has signed Sean Carlson from local football.

Sean wasn't available for selection yesterday because of injury but his impressive displays as a pre-season trialist had already convinced manager Michael Ellison to bring him on board. Sean signed in the Conwy clubhouse prior to our Saturday friendly.

The player arrives from West Cheshire League football with Hale FC and has quickly shown good strength and technique on the ball. He has also had spells at Blackburn Rovers and Macclesfield Town.

The capture brings an unusual double for the Carlson family as Sean's cousin, Tempany plays for our successful Linnets Ladies team.

31 Jul 2016 : Team work is key to Linnets Golf Day success

RUNCORN Linnets are reaping the rewards of their successful Golf Day after a further fine example of co-operation between two of the town's sporting institutions.

Officials and staff of Runcorn Golf Club were once again superb hosts for this now annual event, which saw teams of four compete on the 18-hole parkland course.

Traditionally one of Linnets' major fundraisers, the competition generated a four-figure sum which will prove invaluable as the football club embarks on the 2016-17 season.

Victory in an extremely close race for honours went to a four-ball entered by the Captain and President of Runcorn GC, Irvine Ginger and John Jenkin.

They were joined by fellow senior golf club members Gordon Mayne and Mike Lane.

The wnners' 84-point Stableford total was equalled by KDE Limited whose quartet of David Blinston, David Ankers, Philip Quick and John Pearsall was unlucky to be edged into second place on a back-nine card play-off.

Third place with 82 points went to Apec Taxis, the Linnets' match day programme sponsor. The cab company's line-up featured Jimmy Rockcliffe, Rob Lupton, Keith Davies and Derek Cliffe.

There were several individual prizes - for longest drive at the 11th, won by Dave Fernley, and nearest the pin on various holes, the successful players here being Justin Shaw, Paul Ryan, Paul Rimmer, Gra Erickson and Tim Gibbons.

This year's tournament was sponsored by Grangeside of Runcorn. The car serving, MOT testing and vehicle breakdown specialists, based in Weston village, are regular supporters of the Linnets who were likewise grateful for the backing of a number of other local companies either through sponsorship or participation.

Hole sponsorships were provided by Apec Taxis, Lokring North, Runcorn Weekly News, Finley and Blyth Stonebanks, Grangeside of Runcorn, Runcorn Tropical Fish Society, Anya Russell, Kelfin and Liverpool Echo.

The football club was delighted to welcome back a number of familiar faces from previous tournaments and many of the competitors on Friday have already said they will return again in 2017.

The Linnets were similarly pleased to be reunited with former player-manager Liam Watson (now boss of Stalybridge Celtic), who was representing his company, C and L Legal, in the last of 16 teams to leave the clubhouse.

At the presentations which followed a two-course meal, Runcorn Linnets chairman, Derek Greenwood thanked all the players and sponsors, and particularly Alan Mercer from Grangeside, for contributing to another fitting celebration of the Trust-run football club's 10th anniversary year.

He paid special tribute to the all-round hospitality of the golf club and the hard work of the event organisers and volunteers.

Runcorn GC captain Irvine Ginger, who handed out many of the prizes, said it had been a very enjoyable and extremely well-organised tournament.
