20 Apr 2015 : Youth team's Cup success - report and reaction

RUNCORN Linnets Youth have lifted the North West Youth Alliance's Division Two Cup at the first time of asking with a shock 2-1 victory over Irlam.

Two goals from striker Eddie Shaw saw the mid-table Linnets overcome opponents, who were holding second place ahead of the weekend's games.

Linnets, beaten 2-1 at Irlam in the league just five days earlier, had led from the 12th minute of Sunday's final at Burscough's Victoria Park.

Shaw opened the scoring from a cross in behind the Irlam defence and after half-time, he doubled the lead by converting a penalty awarded for a foul.

Irlam, having lost just twice in 18 league outings this season, gave themselves hope when Karl Cassell pushed forward from defence to unleash a swerving shot from long range.

However, despite giving away up to a year in age to the opposition team, Linnets held out in face of strong late pressure to take the honours in their first season as members of the NWYA.

Andy Hill's victorious team had come through three rounds to reach the final – defeating Manchester Gregorians Youth 4-2 at Manchester City Academy, Hyde Egerton Academy 3-2 in the quarter-final and then Barnton Youth 3-0 at the Millbank Linnets Stadium in their only home tie.

Manager Hill said: "The boys gave excelled all season but yesterday really was the icing on the cake in a final that had a real bit of everything.

"The full 15 boys gave everything yesterday and we had asked them not to leave anything in the changing rooms and then live with 'What might have been'.

"They certainly carried out these instructions plus more. The boys were right at it from the first whistle and although we came under pressure after Irlam had scored the goal and had to endure seven minutes of injury time, I feel we came out worthy winners.

"The boys have worked hard all season and its really pleasing that we can boast the Divisional Cup In what has to be the toughest Youth League around with a squad where 12 of yesterday's squad are still eligible for this age group next year. I couldn't be any prouder of the boys and with the possibility of a top-four finish the future is certainly promising.

Linnets chairman Derek Greenwood said: "Many congratulations to the youth team on their 2-1 win in what proved to be a hugely competitive and enjoyable game.

"The team was a credit to the club in their attitude and approach to the game. Both goals were scored by Eddie Shaw, the first an excellent move from midfield finished well and the second a penalty after Taylor Kennerley was brought down on the box."

Linnets Youth lie seventh in the 13-team division with games in hand on most of the teams above them.

All four semi-finalists in the Divisional Cup came from teams representing North West Counties League clubs.

12 Apr 2015 : Youth team's Jordan in the county set for glory

ONE of our youth team players will be flying the Linnets colours in the FA County Youth Cup final today.

Attacker Jordan Cobley is in the Cheshire County FA Youth team, which also plays in yellow and green and has had an outstanding season.

Their players are aiming to be crowned national champions when taking on Middlesex in the final at The Hive, home of Barnet FC.

This would be a remarkable achievement for such a small county.

Unbeaten in all competitions, they have already done superbly well to get so far after beating the representative teams from West Riding, Northumberland, East Riding Worcestershire and Liverpool along the way.

Jordan is in the 24-strong Cheshire squad, which is vying for a glorious double. After posting four wins and a draw to win the six-team Division One of the Association of Northern Counties Youth Competition, they will play West Riding, Division Two runners-up, in the semi-finals.

Andy Hill, manager of Runcorn Linnets Youth, said: "Jordan (Cobbers) can play anywhere across the attacking positions and is more at home in the number 10 role.

"It's Jordan's second year with Linnets and prior to this, he played for Winnington and Davenham and spent a time with Manchester City and the Centre of Excellence.

"Jordan is a great lad and is easily recognisable with his long blond locks and headband.

"He is a Barnton lad and despite numerous attempts from clubs to prise him away, has always stayed loyal to Linnets and I'm sure he will have a future in and around football."

All at Runcorn Linnets wish Jordan and everyone connected with the Cheshire FA Youth team every success in the final and the remainder of their season.
