18 Oct 2014 : Runcorn Linnets support Respect Weekend

RUNCORN Linnets, in welcoming Abbey Hey for this afternoon's North West Counties League Premier Division match, are delighted to support Respect Weekend taking place today and tomorrow.

Clubs and leagues throughout the country are being invited to play their part by promoting the principles of fair play and remind everyone involved in football of their responsibility to act within the spirit of the game.

Respect is The FA's programme to address unacceptable behaviour in football.

It is designed to help create a safe and fun environment for all to enjoy playing or officiating in football. There is a vested interest in the initiative in Cheshire as our County FA was one of seven to pilot the Respect campaign in 2007-08.

Such was its success, the scheme was rolled out nationally the following season.

A Cheshire FA spokesperson said: "On average, 7,000 referees quit football every year because of the abuse they receive from players and from the sidelines. Lots of children also pack it in because of the attitude and actions of over-enthusiastic and pushy parents.

"In response, The FA's Respect programme provides a series of tools for leagues, clubs, coaches, referees, players and parents from grassroots to elite football to ensure a safe, positive environment in which to enjoy the game.

"These tools include Agreed Codes of Conduct, In-service training for referees, Respect League Sessions and Spectator Barriers funded by the Football Foundation and ensuring that team captains work with referees to manage player behaviour."

In Cheshire, our leagues are signed up to the FA Respect programme and all FA Charter Standard Clubs endorse the programme.

As Cheshire FA's Charter Standard Club of the Year 2014, Runcorn Linnets will today underline our ongoing commitment to Respect.

Our players will be wearing Respect T-shirts as they take to the field and for the pre-match handshakes. Our captain will also wear a Respect armband.

Respect is the collective responsibility of everyone involved in football to create a fair, safe and enjoyable environment in which the game can take place.

Support your team whole-heartedly and cheer them on to victory but please help to ensure that football is also the winner by showing Respect.

15 Oct 2014 : Joey hails influence of departing skipper on table-topping Linnets

Manager Joey Dunn has explained the circumstances behind club skipper Matt Cross's departure from NWC Premier Division leaders Runcorn Linnets, which was announced earlier today.

Joey also paid tribute to the influence Matt has had on the club's playing fortunes during his time at the club.

Joey said: "Following discussions between Matt and I about recent team selections and his position within this, he felt that it is better that he leaves.

"He thanked me for his time at the club and especially my decision to make him captain and said that it was the hardest decision in football he has had to make as he had really enjoyed being a part of Runcorn Linnets.

"I would like to go on record to thank him for the impact he has had in all of his time at the club. He was highly influential in changing the culture and mentality of the team when I first joined and I will always be grateful for this. I am sure all the Linnets wish him well for the future and I have told him he will always be welcome here at the Millbank."

15 Oct 2014 : Matt Cross leaves Linnets

The club can confirm that club captain Matt Cross has left Runcorn Linnets. We thank Matt for his valued contribution to our playing success during his time at the Millbank Linnets Stadium and wish him well for the future.
