08 Oct 2014 : Richly deserved award for 'keeper Mottram
ALL members and supporters of Runcorn Linnets will we are sure join club management, officials and players in congratulating Richie Mottram on a well-earned Goalkeeper of the Month award.
Richie wins the NWCFL Premier Division prize after an outstanding series of displays for the league leaders in September, continuing his fine early-season form.
Below is the citation about Richie, taken from the league website:
For the second successive month, the same praise and plaudits must be levelled at Richie Mottram's superb form in the Linnets goal - ever present, improving form, steadying and calming presence, four clean sheets and again a string of important and quality saves to keep the Linnets at the top of the table.
The eight games in September included five games against the five teams immediately below the leaders, and so the contribution of Mottram in keeping the month's eight opposing teams down to five goals, and registering those four clean sheets is immeasurable.
The month began with impressive shut outs against AFC Liverpool and at Glossop North End, with the Linnets the only team from our level to stop GNE scoring in the month. Two stops from John Lawless caught the eye especially against AFC Liverpool, one a long range effort just tipped wide. His best save at Surrey Street was even better, contorting his shape in mid air to somehow keep Glossop at bay, in his best display in a Linnets shirt up to that date.
Against Maine Road, Rick Williams beat the Runcorn offside trap to be denied by Richie, and then the stopper was beaten for the first time in the month, Jamie Roe beating the stranded Linnets 'keeper. A superb late save from Josh Harper protected the Linnets' point.
At Bootle, Richie made a number of one on one saves, a feature of his improving form throughout the month, again he was powerless to stop Brislen's superb curling shot. Once again Mottram's late save protected the spoils.
A return to clean sheets came at Brocstedes Park, with Richie not having to endure his busiest of nights, as Runcorn overcame St Helens by the only goal of the game, and again at Silsden, another great late save ensured all three points returned to Cheshire.
The highlight of Richie's month came at The Barton Stadium against 1874 Northwich, with an astonishing save from the penalty spot, thankfully recorded in video form for all to savour. He pounced full length to somehow turn the penalty over the bar with the strongest of wrists. More one on one saves epitomised his performance as Colne visited the Millbank Linnets Stadium, as Richie kept the Linnets in the game on numerous occasions from Boyle and Jordan.
A brilliant month for Richie follows his superb August, with the 'keeper becoming increasingly more influential at the Linnets. His attitude has been exemplary throughout the month as well as his form, earning him plaudits from all around the ground.
