17 Sep 2014 : Linnets appearances record for Matt Atherton

Matt Atherton set a new record for most Runcorn Linnets first-team appearances by coming on as a substitute in last night's 1-0 win at St Helens Town.

The versatile player has now played 203 times for Runcorn - going one better than former skipper Rob Whyte, the only other Linnet to have reached the double century of games landmark since the club was formed in 2006.

Matt made his initial club debut in 2010 and returned in 2012 after spells at Clitheroe and Bamber Bridge. Although best known for his wing play, he has filled various other positions including full-back and centre forward and has even successfully stood in as an emergency goalkeeper.

Congratulations Matt on your fine achievement.
