Runcorn Linnets were delighted on Saturday to receive the support of their Swedish Linnet fans at the away win at Winsford.

Chairman, Derek Greenwood explained how the 3 fans from Sweden had become firm Linnets followers: “ In October last season, we received an e-mail via our club website from a fan in Sweden telling us he was coming to one of our games and could we give him details. His name was Stefan Thoren and he told us that with a number of other Swedish fans, they had adopted the Linnets as their non-league team but were also supporters of Stoke City and wanted to combine a visit to see both teams play.

Stefan duly attended a match last year at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.” Stefan takes up the story: “When I came over last year to see the Linnets play, it was my first experience of non-league football in England. I really enjoyed the experience and meeting the fans, who were very friendly. I returned home with a Linnets shirt and scarf and was keen to return this season to see another game. This time, I came back with 2 Swedish friends and we took in the game at Winsford on Saturday and then it was off to Goodison Park on Sunday to watch Stoke play Everton.”

The Swedish Linnets have taken more than a keen interest in Runcorn Linnets back home and have sponsored full back Neil Murphy this season and arrived at Winsford with their own Swedish Linnets banner! They are all looking forward to returning to England again and will definitely turn up again at the Millbank for future Linnets games. In the meantime they will keep an eye on progress via the Linnets website. The fans are pictured at Winsford on Saturday with their banner.

Runcorn beat Winsford United in the North West Counties Premier League at Barton Stadium with a score of 0-1. Matty Atherton put the Linnets ahead in 52nd minute. Lawton gets second yellow in 76th, Linnets down to 10 men.
