04 Oct 2008 : Linnets hold Maine Road to 3-3 AET in FA Vase

In a humdinger of FA Vase clash, Runcorn Linnets managed to equalise in the dying seconds of the regular time to force extra time to be played. With neither team conceding, the replay is to be hosted on Wednesday 8th October, at Wincham Park.

Maine Road went ahead in the 39th minute amidst cries from the Runcorn faithful that the referee had let a number of fouls go unpunished in the run up to the goal, this had left the Linnets exposed and unable to prevent it. In the dying seconds of the half Steve Pickup's pass back to 'keeper Ross Boyd simply didn't have the legs and was picked up by Maine Road who made it 2-0 as they went into the break.

The second half started with the Linnets looking feisty, and they were rewarded in the 50th minute when Damien Morrison scored, and just four minutes later Rob Whyte dealt the equaliser, pushing the scoreline to 2-2.

Maine Road thought it was all sewn up when just minutes before the majority expected the match to finish, Ross Boyd lost possession of the ball, either through fumble or interference, and this was put away in the melee, giving the hosts the lead.

After what seemed like an eternety of added time, the Linnets faithful thought that their Vase run had come to an end just as Ged Courtney put away the equaliser seconds before full time was called.

With neither team able to capitalise on their chances in Extra Time, it necessitates a replay, to be held at Wincham Park on Wednesday, 8th October.
