09 Aug 2008 : Linnets beat Silsden 3-1

The Linnets got the season off to a flying start with a 3-1 win over Silsden. After a second minute goal was disallowed, Rob Whyte made his effort count in the 3rd minute to put the Linnets ahead.

Runcorn may have been guilty of easing off a little after their initial dominance, but they maintained control for the remained of the first half, with Robbie Holcroft relatively untroubled in goal. It wasn't until the second half when Silsden managed to equalise in the 55th minute, and Robbie had to pull off a fantastci point-blank save minutes later, that the Linnets re-deployed their dominance with two goals from Dave Thompson in the 65th and 71st minutes.

28 Jul 2008 : Press Release - Upcoming Fans Club Trophy Match

The club has issued a press release in regard to the upcoming match against AFC Liverpool for the Fans' Club Trophy.

Runcorn Linnets are looking forward to their first opportunity to win some silverware on Saturday as they look to play AFC Liverpool for the newly established Fans' Club Trophy. The match will be played on an annual basis in pre-season with the venue alternating each year.

The Linnets developed a special relationship with the new AFC Liverpool outfit last season when the club was being formed. The Linnets hosted a number of AFC Liverpool staff at a home match to observe the operational side of things, as well as offering general advice with regard to setting up a new club.

AFC Liverpool is aimed at Liverpool fans who have been priced out of Premier League football. The club will adopt the same colours, fan songs and will also be based around the same community as Liverpool F.C. They will be playing their home matches at Valerie Park, Prescot, a ground well known to Linnets fans.

The trophy itself, the design of which is being voted for by the fans of both clubs via the Linnets' website, won't be chosen until Wednesday when the voting closes, and will be presented by a fan of the winning club, chosen via lottery on the day.

The match is to be played at Wincham Park, Witton on Saturday 2nd August, with a 3:00pm kick-off. Admission is £5.50 for adults, and £3.00 for concessions.

However, before the Trophy Match, Steve Wilkes' team have two newly arranged friendlies, one at Kendal Town on Tuesday night, and one against Mossley Hill AFC on Wednesday (played at IM Marsh College, Liverpool), at which the players of the squad will have one of their last opportunities to impress the manager before he whittles them down to the squad he intends to take into the season proper. These new fixtures have been added following the cancellation of scheduled matches against Daisy Hill and Witton Albion both due to concerns regarding the respective playing surfaces.
