29 Sep 2007 : Runcorn draw with Colne 0-0

Runcorn were only able to take the one point from a match in which they had the upper hand, especially in the second half. The Colne pitch has a real gradient on it, and in the first half the Linnets played uphill. Rumours of a ski-lift having been installed on the south side were unfounded, if not credible. The first half was a relatively even affair with neither team having a particular edge. It wasn't until the second half with the Linnets having the downhill advantage that they looked the superior side, enjoying more possession. However, it was Robbie Holcroft who had to make a number of saves, with the Colne 'keeper relatively untroubled, as the Runcorn attempts failed to strike the target.

25 Sep 2007 : Runcorn beat Warrington Town 1-2 in Cheshire Senior Cup

In an entertaining match where Runcorn always looked the stronger side, the Linnets had their second win in a cup match in 4 days with a 2-1 win over Warrington at their Canterlever Park ground. Thomas Lamb scored in 31st minute, but a lapse in concentration in the opening seconds of the second half saw the hosts equalise. Dave Thompson put the Linnets ahead once more after 58 minutes, but in truth it could, and potentially should, have been more like a two or three goal advantage.

We now face a home tie in the next round against our old foe, Altrincham.

22 Sep 2007 : Runcorn beat Daisy Hill 3-0 in FA Vase

Runcorn won their very first match in a national FA competition with a 3-0 victory over Daisy Hill in the 2nd Round qualifier for the FA Vase . Daisy Hill went down to 10 men after just three minutes after their #7 was judged to have handled the ball off the goal-line. Dave Thompson put away the resultant penalty. It was Dave Thompson again in the second half that pushed the Linnets clear with a header in the 69th minute. Substitute, Thomas Lamb got the third goal in the 72nd minute leaving the final score 3-0.

17 Sep 2007 : Press Release - Upcoming FA Vase match

The club has issued a press release regarding the upcoming FA Vase match to be played against Daisy Hill on Saturday 22nd September.

Runcorn Linnets prepared for FA Vase clash

Runcorn Linnets FC are geared up for their first ever match in a full FA Competition with their debut in the FA Vase taking place at Wincham Park, Witton, against Vodkat League second division outfit, Daisy Hill of Westhoughton, Bolton. The Linnets, having recently found their form, come off the back of two league victories, and have never lost to Daisy Hill, having beaten them in both league matches last season, and in a pre-season warm up this year.

On Tuesday 11th, Runcorn Linnets returned to the location of their very first match just over a year ago, Knowsley Road, the home of St Helens Town. This time the Linnets were victorious with a three goals to one win. All of the goals came in the second half, despite the Linnets looking the stronger side, especially to the end of the first half. In the second half, the Linnets came out with renewed vigour, and the mostly ball stayed in the St Helens half, and in Runcorn’s possession. In the 72nd minute, the Linnets were rewarded with their first goal; a Dave Thompson header from Colin Flood’s throw in. Just four minutes later, Jay Edwards doubled the tally with a great dipping strike from 25 yards out, which took a little deflection into the back of the net. Thomas Lamb took the third from the penalty spot, following a foul on Jay Edwards. St Helens got their consolation in the last minute when Runcorn were, perhaps, just playing out for the whistle.

Saturday 15th saw a return to Atherton, this time to Atherton Laburnam Rovers, as opposed to Atherton Collieries which was the Linnets’ season opener. The Linnets looked the stronger side from the off, and it was in the 17th minute that saw Neil Roberts poke the ball over the line after Dave Thompson headed on a corner into a frantic six yard box. Just over ten minutes later, Dave Thompson scored the second goal from a Mike Young free kick that the Atherton ‘keeper misjudged, leaving the ball at Thomson’s feet. The second half saw Runcorn rebuffing Atherton advances, but nothing came that caused the Linnets too much to worry about.

So, attention is now turned to the FA Vase match on Saturday. Colin Flood, who didn’t play in the Atherton match, looks unlikely to play on Saturday due to a tweaked medial knee ligament, but Paul Scott should be back, and available for selection, after a short absence.

Prices for Saturday’s match remain unchanged from normal, with adults costing £5, and concessions just £2. The road to Wembly starts on Saturday!
