28 Jul 2007 : Runcorn beat Chadderton 1-2
In a very competitive match for a friendly, Runcorn Linnets were able to keep the upper hand over Chadderton in a 1-2 victory. No sooner had the game started than a Chadderton player suffered an ankle injury and had to be substituted. Paul Scott scored in 15th min. Chadderton equalised from the penalty spot in 37th. Unlike previous friendlies, the team wasn't swapped at half time, although during the course of the second half, most of the players on the bench were given a chance. Thomas Lamb, who had been in the starting 11, scored the winner in the 60th minute, and was substituted shortly thereafter.
24 Jul 2007 : Runcorn lose to Skelmersdale 2-1
The curse of the red away strip strikes again! As at Ashton Athletic, the match was split into two, with separate teams taking each half, and those teams were a mixture of both familiar and new faces. The first half, played in our new home kit, was goal-less, and after a strong start, Runcorn were put under a lot of pressure by the home team. The second half, played in the dreaded red kit, had a feisty Runcorn looking stronger, but it went awry in the 74th minute when a penalty, awarded to Skelmersdale, proved unstoppable to Lord Holcroft of Skem himself. Ten minutes later, and Skelmersdale made it two. In practically the last touch of the match, Runcorn provided their consolation goal from a new player who had been threatening to score a peach all half. His most notable flick had hit the bar earlier, but his successful attempt had excellent weight and placement to put it into the top right corner, well out of the reach of the Skelmersdale 'keeper.Although we still haven't won in the red kit, the performance against a team in UniBond First Division was encouraging.
19 Jul 2007 : Runcorn beat Ashton Athletic 2-3
The Linnets' pre-season finally got under way at Brocstedes Park against Ashton Athletic. Steve Carragher chose to run out two different teams, one in the first half, and one in the second, both made up of regulars and trialists. The new blue & white quarter strip gots its first run-out, and proved successful with a half time scoreline of 1-2. The second half, played in last years red away strip was a 1-1 draw, leaving the final scoreline at 2-3.
17 Jul 2007 : Press Release - Golf Day
The club has issued a press release regarding the successful Golf Day held on the 13th July.
The unusually wet weather recently has had an effect on the Linnets’ pre-season preparations, but the wet weather didn’t spoil the Golf Day on Friday. The pre-season friendly against Chadderton, which was due to be played on Saturday, had to be postponed until the 28th July due to a waterlogged pitch, and both of the friendlies arranged to be played at the Linnet’s groundshare home of Wincham Park, Witton, against Witton Albion and Altrincham, have had to be cancelled due to the wet weather having an adverse effect on the treatments that the playing surface has received in the off-season. Despite it raining for the whole day, the fifteen teams that braved the weather at the Golf Day at Runcorn Golf Club on the 13th enjoyed the day immensely. It was made memorable, especially to the longer-serving supporters, by the presence of a number of Runcorn Legends - Alan Foster still playing to a 6 handicap at the age of 73! Other well known players of the past included Eddie Moss, Jock Cunningham and Ronnie Massey. The winners of the competition were The Miller Men with a score of 104 points. All four in the team were Runcorn Golf members so they obviously used their local knowledge to their advantage. In second place was Runcorn Skip Hire with 99 points and in third place was a young team from KDE Ltd with 98 points. The prizes were presented by Derek Greenwood, Chairman of Runcorn Linnets, who thanked the Golf Club for the use of their course and facilities. He also thanked the local companies who had generously donated prizes. He concluded with the hope that the lease negotiations with Riverside College would be successful, and looked forward to the club’s return to Runcorn. The Captain of Runcorn Golf Club, Mr. Graham Peattie, thanked all the people who had helped make the day a success and welcomed the members of Runcorn Linnets and wished the Club every success for the new season. He hoped that the Club would be back in Runcorn in the near future. Fortunately, the next major event organised by the club is unlikely to be affected by the weather. The Luxury Sporting Evening, to be held at the Holiday Inn on Saturday August 4th, will feature former Liverpool and Wales legend Joey Jones and the entertainment will be provided by one of the UK`S funniest Comedians; Lester Crabtree. Our compère for the evening is Mr Andy Nicholls. Tickets are priced at £35 each or £300 for a full table of 10. The price includes a gourmet 3 course meal, and entertainment, plus we will be holding a grand auction. The Tote continues to do well with the estimated jackpot for this weekend’s draw estimated at well over £350. Entry costs just £1 and tickets can be purchased from a number of pubs in the town or online at www.RuncornLinnetsFC.co.uk/Tote.
