23 Jul 2002 : Runcorn beat Warrington Town 5-2
Runcorn continued their pre-season warm-up against Warrington Town at Cantilever Park with a 5-2 win.
In addition to familiar faces, Liam Watson took the opportunity to try out some new players; Mike Edwards from Widnes, Steve Torpey released by Liverpool, ex-Droylsden striker Wes Kinney, ex-Runcorn striker Richard Irving, and for a few minutes at the end of the match we had a father and son team. Neil Whalley's son, 14 year old Shaun, played the last few minutes of the match. Despite his young age, and lack of his father's physical presence, Shaun looked very comfortable on the field, and obviously has a bright future ahead.
In the first half goals were scored by Lunt, Kinney, and Torpey. The second half saw goals from Watson, and Irving (pen).

19 Jul 2002 : Fans rally to raise funds for club
A fund raising steering group has been put into place with long time supporter, Derek Greenwood, as chairmain. The group aims to generate £50,000 towards the running costs of the club, and increase the numbers of supporters at home games.
Derek said, "We want as many people as possible to get involved with the fundraising, either through helping to generate the money or, just as importantly, supporting the various ventures and events we will be introducing. Everybody has their own views on the past and the move to Widnes but we now have to look to the future. We are now accustomed to Halton Stadium and the forthcoming season is a very important one. There is a big desire to help the club develop and we are positive that we can make a valuable contribution. It costs between £150,000 and £200,000 a season to run a club at this level but with everyone pulling together, we are confident we can succeed. We are going to have our highs and lows on the field, but we have a young team who are making good progress and did well enough last season under Liam Watson's leadership to gain early exemption in various cups in the coming season."
Initiatives include the launch of a new Linnets scratchcard with a top prize of £1,000, a sportsman's dinner, the introduction of a 50-50 ticket to replace the matchday raffle, a Halloween Night at Runcorn War Memorial Club on October 31 and schools coaching.
It is hoped as many supporters as possible will attend a meeting in the stadium after the first Saturday home game of the season against Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday, August 24 at which the fundraising steering group will outline their strategy.
In addition, the football club are looking to recruit more members for their Lottery draw. For a £1 per week stake, people have the chance of winning £200 from Monday to Thursday inclusive and £500 every Friday. If you are interested in participating in the lottery, then please contact the club via the feedback page.
