04 Apr 2019 : Navy man Mark is decked out in yellow and green!
A serviceman from Runcorn left his colleagues in no doubt as to which football club he supports as they embark on their latest tour of duty in the Royal Navy.
Avid Runcorn Linnets fan Mark Doughty, 28, has decked out his cabin in the club's Yellow and Green colours after contacting us to ask if we could send him some souvenirs.
Mark got in touch with Linnets at the end of January with the following message through our website:
I am currently a serving member of the Armed Forces in the Royal Navy and a passionate Runcorn Linnets fan, who lives in Runcorn.
I am a Weapons Engineer on board HMS Duncan which is deploying mid February 2019. We are currently renovating our mess deck ready for the deployment.
Myself and the other members of our mess are emailing the clubs we follow in an attempt to get some merchandise to improve our home from home over the coming months.
Anything would be really appreciated as many mess members follow various football clubs.
If anything was to be sent out it would then be photographed and sent to the club as a thank you.
Yours sincerely,
LETWE Mark Doughty
Dave Bettley, Trust secretary at Linnets, said: "We were only too pleased to send Mark a package of club merchandise to remind him of The Millbank while he is away.
"Mark was quick to thank the club and made further contact from on board ship while preparing to leave on its latest deployment.
"We have featured him in our club programme and the edition is winging its way to him as an extra souvenir."
Mark Doughty added: "I support the club as much as I can when I'm home, go to the odd couple of games in between weekends home and spending it with the family.
"My best memory would be gaining promotion last season after missing out a few seasons before. Hopefully we can keep up the hard work and results we've achieved this season and push on for back to back promotions.
"I can't really talk much about the deployment but we will be in the Mediterranean. I have been in the Navy now for six and a half years. I served on HMS Defender and I'm now on HMS Duncan as a leading hand.
"There are a mixture of teams supported on board. I'm an Evertonian/Linnet and a couple of the lads are from Widnes and Liverpool, one even follows Witton Albion too."
A TV crew will again be following the fortunes of HMS Duncan and those aboard during this latest deployment, just as they did for the last, for a forthcoming Channel 5 series of Warship: Life at Sea.
